The influence of ice flow acceleration on seasonal elevation change and Long-term elevation change on land terminating sectors of West Greenland

[Abstract]
Attribution of Greenland Ice Sheet (GrIS) surface elevation change to processes is critical to understanding ice sheet response to climate changes. In general, surface elevation changes result from surface mass balance (SMB) and glacier dynamics. But these processes are not independent. Surface elevation change over seasonal time scales therefore results from the complex convolution of interdependent processes, the outcome of which is unclear and untested. I will talk about seasonal elevation changes on land terminating margins of West Greenland as well as long-term elevation changes estimated by multiple DEMs.

A basal topographic map in the Dome Fuji area, East Antarctica, constructed from a ground-based radar survey

[Abstract]
Knowledge gained from ice core studies is crucial to understand the past and present climate and to predict the impacts of future climate changes. The International Partnership for Ice Core Sciences (IPICS) identified that drilling deep ice cores extending back in time to 1.5 million years (Ma) is crucial to better understand the change of the periodicity of the glacial cycles from 40 thousand years (ka) to the current 100 ka during the mid-Pleistocene transition (0.9−1.2 Ma). However, continuous ice core records extending beyond 1 Ma have not been retrieved from the Antarctic ice sheet. The Dome Fuji area in East Antarctica is one of the candidate areas where we may be able to find very old ice near the bottom of the ice sheet. The Japanese Antarctic Research Expedition (JARE) has conducted deep ice corings at Dome Fuji twice in the past decades. They recovered ice cores covering ages up to about 720 ka BP. Sufficient knowledge of the basal topography is crucial to find suitable candidates based on numerical ice sheet experiments. The JARE have accumulated radar sounding data in this area since 1984 (JARE 26). In order to reveal the more detailed basal topography to find candidate site of very old ice in the Dome Fuji area, a ground-based radar survey was conducted over an area of 20,000 km2 with a line spacing of 5 km during JARE 59 (2017−2018 Antarctic summer). Based on results of these surveys, we conducted a more detailed radar survey at Dome Fuji in the 2018−2019 season as a collaboration between Japan, Norway and the United States. We investigated a distance of 2,700 km in an area of about 1,000 km2. The final spacing between the survey lines varied between 0.5 km and 0.25 km. We analyze Japanese and US radar data to construct an improved map of the basal topography in the Dome Fuji area to foster the identification of a suitable drilling site in the region.

Glacier-ocean/lake interactions in Greenland, Antarctica, and Patagonia

[Abstract]
With a focus on interactions of calving glaciers with the ocean and lakes, studies have been carried out in Bowdoin Glacier in Greenland, Langhovde Glacier in East Antarctica, and lake-calving glaciers in the Southern Patagonia Icefield. In this seminar talk, I present overview of our activity and research results in the three regions over the last ~10 years. I also take this opportunity to introduce our new and ongoing projects, ArCS2 in Greenland, JARE-ROBOTICA-Grantarctic in Antarctica, and JSPS project in Patagonia.

[Abstract]
My talk will discuss the strange 1000 km long valley under the north Greenland ice sheet and evaluate the possibility that it is an active subglacial river. I'll also show some 3D animations of the SICOPOLIS Greenland ice sheet predictions for ISMIP6. Finally I'll introduce some preliminary 3D results of modelling the extremely localized Sapporo snowfall event during this years Snow Festival.

輪読会

氷河に関する基本的知識を身につけるために、みんなで集まって勉強会を行います。 現在読み進めているものは、氷河の物理学を扱ったものとしてはでもっともポピュラーな W.S.B. Paterson の The Physics of Glacier (4th ed.)です。 学生が担当された分を読み込み、参加者に説明しながら一緒に理解していきます。
